A one-day symposium on “Nepal Studies in Russia” was successfully held at the Russian House in Kathmandu, jointly organized by Shailee Theater and the Russian House. Organized in the context of 70 years of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Russia, the symposium reaffirmed the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries while exploring future opportunities for cooperation across cultural, educational, and developmental sectors.
The program featured remarks from Rinchen Rakshaev, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal, who highlighted the importance of cultural and academic cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations.
The focal speaker, Prof. Dr. Jangab Chauhan, shared a compelling and insightful narrative on the literary and cultural connections between Nepal and Russia. Dr. Chauhan is a prominent Nepali academic, author, translator, he is also the former President of the Nepal-Russia Literary Society and served as Nepal's Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Prof. Dr. Chauhan has played a significant role in strengthening intellectual and cultural ties between the two countries, including serving as the former President of the Nepal-Russia Literary Society. In his address, he reflected on the historic visit of Laxmi Prasad Devkota to Moscow, describing it as a landmark moment in cultural diplomacy. He further highlighted the contributions of generations of Nepali students who studied in Russia in fields such as medicine, engineering, management, and other development sectors, emphasizing their vital role in Nepal’s nation-building and overall development upon their return. Drawing from his academic and diplomatic experience, he underscored the importance of literature, education, and scholarly exchange in deepening mutual understanding and sustaining long-term Nepal–Russia relations.
Nabaraj Budhathoki presented on Russian plays performed by Shailee Theater, highlighting the 17 year long partnership between the Russian House and Shailee Theater. His presentation reflected on this enduring collaboration through the staging of works by renowned Russian artists over the years, demonstrating how theatre has served as a powerful medium of cultural exchange. He also expressed commitment to further strengthening this long standing partnership through new productions and continued artistic cooperation in the future.
In the End Director of Russian House Anastasia Khokhlova congratulated Shailee Theater on its sustained contributions to cultural collaboration and extended her appreciation to Jangab Chauhan for his insightful reflections. She reaffirmed the Russian House’s continued commitment to promoting educational and cultural exchange, while also emphasizing Russia’s readiness to support Nepal’s development through cooperation in various sectors and by further strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
